Educational
Philosophy
Our intention at Uplands is to educate the
whole child. By this we mean that we strive
to develop the full potential of each pupil
and we emphasise all aspects of his or her
education. We believe that a primary school
must offer a broad curriculum – to give
a wide-ranging foundation for future development
and progress. We want our children to leave
Uplands as well-rounded individuals with a
feeling of self worth, with well developed
self-discipline, sound values and a sense
of responsibility. We also espouse and aim
to develop the “old-fashioned”
values of good manners, of tolerance, of dignity,
of respect for others and respect for property.
Academic
Programme
We continue to lay emphasis on the three “R’s”
but we also have as set subjects, Music, Art,
Computer studies, and Design and Technology.
The Science, Technology, Art and Media
Centre was opened in January 2003, while the
upgrading our Music and language teaching
facilities has also been completed. In the
field of Drama, we stage a series of plays
throughout the year and it is our intention
to give every pupil in the school from Grade
000 to Grade 7 the opportunity to perform on
stage during the course of the year. We take
every opportunity to participate in Speech
and Drama Eisteddfods and in music and choir
festivals, and we aim to develop confidence
in Public Speaking as part of the education
that we offer. We do not regard exams solely
as a fair or accurate method of assessing
a pupil’s ability or potential, and
we place as much emphasis on continuous assessment
throughout the term as we do on exam results.
Children never “fail” a year at
Uplands. If we feel they will gain by spending
an extra year in a class, then we recommend
that they repeat the year. This often has
nothing to do with the marks that have been
allocated to the pupil.
