Boarding

The boarding environment is homely and warm. We currently have twenty boarders, housed in two comfortable boarding houses. The girls occupy the top floor of Webster House, the country residence from which the school expanded over seventy years ago, and the boys are in their own building, “Selby-Taylor Hostel”. All children are “weekly” boarders, who go home at week-ends. Both hostels have resident staff in adjoining flats who cater for the needs of the boarders. Food, always a topic of keen interest amongst boarders, is plentiful, tasty and wholesome.
Webster House provides accommodation for the girls in rooms in the upper storey. Girls are put with their classmates in bedrooms accommodating between three and ten girls, A matrons flat at close quarters, ensures constant supervision and a motherly presence when required. The same is true of the boys’ hostel, Selby-Taylor, which is a separate building, specifically designed as a hostel, with two dormitories, each capable of sleeping ten to twelve boys. All meals are taken communally, in the school dining room. A “home from home” atmosphere is very much part of the Uplands tradition. Indeed, many day pupils spend nights in the boarding houses when parents are away for a period of time.

Owing to less demand for boarding in recent years, boarding is being phased out at Uplands, and the last year when boarding will be offered will be 2010.  While we will continue to accept children from Grade Three and upwards, parents must be aware of this decision by the Board in 2007.
