Executive Headmaster's Message

Set in an exceptionally picturesque part of South Africa, sits a gem of a school. Uplands is a co-educational independent school that sits on a 110 hectare estate boasting world class facilities in a rural setting. Nature abounds on our campus and our children have the opportunity to get their feet dirty, swim in the dam, go experiment on the pump track with their mountain bike or any of the many other activities on offer. Here each child is seen as an individual and encouraged to be creative. The emotion that drives our value system is Happy. We strive to make the learning experience for every one of our pupils a unique and happy one.

We cater for pupils from the year they turn three right through to Grade 12. We are affiliated to the Independent Schools Association of Southern Africa and our Matrics write the examinations of the Independent Examination Board. Our Matric pass rate has been 100% since inception and last year we achieved a 96% Bachelor Degree acceptance rate. We operate under the auspices of the Anglican Church and pupils from the Prep and the College attend regular Eucharist services.

We offer an integrated day where all pupils are involved in the compulsory co-curricular programme that runs in the afternoon, Monday to Thursday. We have world class boarding from Gr 4 through to Grade 12 with more than half of the pupils in the College being boarders. All pupils receive morning snacks and a hot lunch so there is no need for parents to pack a snack or lunch for school.

Ours is a community school that is well worth a visit to experience what makes us so special.

Uplands develops interested and interesting people who are self-confident, happy and successful in a changing world.  They are creative, critical thinkers who embrace change and develop lasting, healthy relationships.

Mission statement

Uplands provides a dynamic, caring, well-rounded, values-based education delivered by a quality team.  Academics, Co-curricular, Boarding, Outreach, Community and an Anglican-based ethos are essential to our success, as we grow a world-class, forward-thinking school.”

Anglican ethos

Uplands has a Christian ethos and is run under the auspices of the Anglican Church of Southern Africa. We are, however, inclusive in our attitude towards other religions and pupils are encouraged to reinforce the spiritual aspect of their lives.

We seek to nurture an inclusive Christian-based education and offer our pupils numerous opportunities for spiritual growth.  Divinity classes form part of the academic curriculum from Grades 4 to 11.

There are opportunities for worship marked by regular Chapel services. At the Preparatory School there is a weekly, short Chapel service for the Foundation Phase pupils, with our Junior and Senior Preparatory School pupils celebrating Holy Communion every Friday.

We have a Chapel service at the College fortnightly, which normally includes the celebration of Holy Communion twice per term. These are supplemented by outside speakers who expose the community to various Christian faith perspectives.

We have a Sunday Evening Service in the College Chapel for pupils, staff, parents and anyone in the Uplands Community who wishes to attend. It is focused on the Eucharist, but we are using alternative forms of Liturgy to make it more interactive and relevant to those attending. Voluntary opportunities for Christian involvement, such as Christian Fellowship and Bible Study for pupils, take place once a week.

A course of preparation for Baptism, Admission to Communion and Confirmation is offered each year at College, while at the Preparatory School we offer Baptism and Admission to Communion courses. An annual Christian Camp is offered to all our pupils and is always well attended.

We make an effort to follow the Christian Year by having various events such as:

  •  Pancakes on Shrove Tuesday
  •  Imposition of the Ashes on Ash Wednesday and
  •  Carols by Candlelight
